Right now I'm working on what is my first ever creator-owned book, Half Past Danger. It's a tale of high adventure set in 1943 during WW2, and I'm really enjoying the process of creating and writing my own story and characters. Teen Wolf

Next week sees the release of issue 1 of 'Teen Wolf' from Top Cow/Image. The story is called 'Bite Me', and is written by my former Angel collaborator and scribe extraordinaire David Tischmann. It's a brand new, original tale overseen by the show's creators, and a great, fun ride. I'd reccommend it to any fans of the new show(which apparently is doing really well straight out of the blocks, which is fantastic).

Harmony

These are some illustrations done for the Peter David prose story starring Harmony from the recent IDW Angel Yearbook(it was the last Angel book that IDW put out before the changeover back to Dark Horse). Plus, the li'l unicorn emoticons that were peppered throughout the story.
I really enjoyed working on Harm; one of the very few Angelverse characters that up until that point I hadn't gotten to draw. Colours are by the uber-talented Ms Jordie Bellaire.

Teen Wolf

For the last 3 months I've been working on a brand new Teen Wolf series for MTV/Top Cow. It's based on the new MTV show, and it's safe to say, this ain't yer daddy's Teen Wolf. Been a lot of fun drawing all the wolfed-out action scenes, and it's also been great re-teaming with one of my favourite ANGEL writers, David Tischmann, who really knows his way around a script.

Heroes Con Charlotte

Sorry about the radio silence of late, been extremely busy on a project that hasn't been announced yet. Once it has though, I'll be back all guns blazing. In the meantime, this coming weekend I'll be at Heroes Con in Charlotte, North Carolina. I'll probably be floating around fellow Micks Dec Shalvey and Will Sliney's tables in artists' alley most of the time. If ye seem , say howdy. I've herad it's one of the most enjoyable shows of the year, and I've never been, so can't wait.

I do this likeness stuff a LOT, and it comes easier to me now than it used to, but I'm sure looking forward to drawing some comics where the characters don't have to look like specific people! I threw some red on there at the end, just cos it looks cool, really.

Here's the first of a few Commissions I drew this week during some rare downtime. Even on my infrequent days off I get restless incredibly quickly and feel like I should be drawing, not sitting on my arse, y'know, relaxing. Heaven forbid. I'll post a bit of the process work on the others as I've done here, sometimes I think that stuff is just as interesting as the final piece.

Angel issue 41 lands in funnybook stores throughout the land next wednesday the 26th of January. it's the first issue of the book that I've drawn in over a year, and working on it was like slipping into a favourite old pair of shoes, like I'd never been away. The script by David Tischman and Mariah Huehner is excellent, and lovely to work from. Well worth a read, I promise.

I'll be signing at the launch of the new Eclectic Micks sketchbook this coming Friday, at Forbidden Planet Dublin from 5-7pm(weather permitting! Lotta snow round these parts). Willow and Spike

So it's been revealed that I'll be joining úber-scribe Brian Lynch on the second half of his new Spike series, and believe me, the script I've read so far is brilliant. A certain guest-star appears(Willow!) and she is so very mired in-character, it's a joy to behold. This is the Willow we know and love. I'm only a few pages into my first issue(5), and already I'm having a ball.
I'm taking over from the amazing Franco Urru for a few issues, as he's had to duck out for personal reasons. I'm sure he'll be back soon though, as you can only keep a man like that out of the game for so long!
This isn't the only project I've been working on for our editor, Mariah Huehner(this lady knows her stuff, class act all the way). Keep your eyes peeled for some other Angelverse artwork at some point soon...

This week sees the launch of the first issue of the new A-Team book I've just finished working on. This one's gauranteed to be on time, since the last issue in the series was coloured and lettered before the first one even hit! I really reccommend this book to action-adventure fans and folks who used to love the show. It retains everything that was great about the eighties version and adds just the right amount of contemporary spice to really set things off. This book is set around the same time as the upcoming movie, and is literally a globe-spanning adventure.

I've been working on a new A-Team book for IDW for the last few weeks, and it's been an absolute blast. Plenty of action and adventure in the old-skool mold.
The book features the new version of the team that'll be appearing in cinemas everywhere later in the new year, and I think they've done a dynamite job casting-wise. I was and remain a huge fan of the original show, and once again comics affords me the chance to play in a sandbox that most don't get near.
Look for issue 1 of The A-Team in march, as written by Joe Carnahan and Tom Waltz.

This wednesday sees the release of the first ever Angel Annual, a 50-page monster by myself and Brian Lynch. The script on this one is just so, so funny. Spot-on piss-take after piss-take of every action-movie cliche you can think of. All delivered with po-faced sincerity by our main man, Cangel. Boy, am I gonna miss drawing Brian's books.

It's kinda bitter-sweet this one, in that while it's almost certainly my finest hour on Angel, it's also very probably my last. So happy face, but then, inevitably, crushingly, sad face.

Please pick this badboy up, we're really rather proud of it. It's a beautiful print-job, with its own spine and everything. I also have to mention the gorgeous job that fellow Oirishman Len O'Grady did on the colours, so sweet.

So, this coming Wednesday, December 23rd.
Do it to it.

Just What I Always Wanted: An exhibiton of Irish comic book art

I've been invited to take part in an art exhibition here in Dublin, the theme being 'Just what I always wanted' for christmas. All the pieces are by top Irish artists(and me) and are being auctioned off in aid of Crumlin St. and Temple St. childrens' hospitals, so please drop by the Twisted Pepper on Abbey St. between the 1rst(today) and 12th of December.

Angel Sketchbook

Hey. I've had a few people get onto me now wondering what the story is with ordering the Angel sketchbook off me, so here's the skinny. The book itself is 84 pages and costs 10.00 euro. The postage and packaging(anywhere in the world) would be another 5 euro, so you're looking at 15 quid altogether. The book turned out really nicely and I'm very happy with it, so it does come recommended, if only by Brian and I!

Ecclectic Micks Sketchbook Luanch/Signing/Shambles

Ahoy-hoy gentle readers, just a reminder that myself and most of the other Micks(everyone 'cept PJ) will be signing copies of the new Micks sketchbook next saturday the 14th from 3-5pm in Forbidden Planet Dublin. Is That It? Am I done?

So I finished up the art for the Angel annual on Tuesday; bittersweet.
On one hand it's probably the best comicbook I've ever had the good fortune to be involved in, but on the other... It's quite probably my last work in the Angelverse. I've been working on Angel books of one form or another for the last two and a half years, and I've loved every minute of it. I remember lobbying Chris for weeks for a shot on the upcoming official continuation of the show, the story that turned out to be 'After The Fall'. What a time to get to play with Joss' toys, and on stories of such quality written by Brian.
Sigh... great times, but I'm ready for a change. Thanks so much to anybody who picked up the various books, and a HUGE thanks to Chris 'I'm two-sevenths Irish you know' Ryall and to the man, Brian 'I'll see you in hell, hopefully once a year' Lynch.
Hopefully I'll still get to contribute a cover here and there, but other than that,
I'm out.

Angel 26

The first issue of my final arc on Angel landed in stores last week, and by all accounts seems to have been well-received by just about everybody, which is lovely news. I really enjoyed working on the 'Boys And Their Toys' storyline with Brian, and I think issue 27 is even better than 26. It's the high-concept that sells these books for me, and Brian is the man in that regard. His ideas manage to be original and fantastically witty while at the same time they make you think 'why the hell didn't I think of that?'
Issue 26 leads into part 2 in issue 27 next month, and then in December the whole thing is wrapped up in the nigh-50 page beast that is the first Angel annual, 'Last Angel in Hell'. Myself, Brian and Chris are VERY proud of this one, and wait'll you see the colours on it by fellow Irishman Len O'Grady.

I GAURANTEE that the annual will be one of the best comics of all time, DESPITE the fact that I drew it. The script is that good.

Back from Birmingham last night, wrecked. Great con was had by all though, met some fantastic people and did a great trade in sketches/sketchbooks/original art. Thanks so much to everybody who stopped by the Micks table, myself and the lads really appreciated it. We also had some sore heads after 3 nights in a row of sessions and shenanigans, with some utterly fantastic people.

Last Angel in Hell Contest

I'm gonna jump in here on this too- The winner of this contest can also expect some original art from any of the Angel books that I've worked on, winner's choice. Sketchbooks

My first sketchbook will be debuting at the British International Comics Show on the weekend of the 3rd of october. The book is 84 pages and contains plenty of Angel-centric sketches, commissions, pencils and inks and the like. On top of that is a brand new intro by your-and-my favourite Angel scribe, Brian Lynch. I'm really happy with how the book turned out, so if you're attending the con be sure and drop by the Ecclectic Micks table to check it out.
Speaking of the Micks, our first group sketchbook will also be making it's bow at BICS(you wait ages for one, then two come along at once...). Jam packed with the highlights from the first year of the Micks blog, it contains some really stellar stuff.

Angel 26+27 'Boys and Their Toys'

What-ho gentle readers!
Can finally talk a bit about the new Angel story arc by Brian and myself, since it was all announced at Comic-con last week.
The official solicit goes a little bit like this:

Angel #26: Boys and Their Toys #1 (of 2)

Somebody has made a movie based on Angel’s adventures in hell! Angel and Spike go to a comic con to see how badly Hollywood has mangled true events, only to find themselves surrounded by supernatural evil at every turn. Can Angel tell the difference between an evil demon and a 14-year-old fanboy dressed as an evil demon? Is there a difference? The Angel: After the Fall team of Brian Lynch and Stephen Mooney throw Angel and Spike into an all-new hell!

Sounds good, right? Well it is. The issues were finished last week(writing AND art) and I think its some of Brian's very best Angelverse work. When I heard I'd get to illustrate an Angel/Spike 'buddy movie' type storyline I was pretty darn excited, as I loved the episodes of the show where they'd focus on the bickering, sibling-type relationship the boys share.
There's some stuff in these two issues that rivals Cavemen v Astronauts, I shit you not.

Here are my two covers, firstly the B+W version of the 'Action Figure' cover for issue 26(as I didn't do the colours) and then two versions of the cover for 27(which I DID colour).

The first version of 27 is the one that everybody's seen already, but the second is new. It shows our boy Groo(who features pretty heavily in this storyline, with his funniest dialogue yet) seperating the two sides of the Spangel head.
Chris and Brian quite liked the Groo version, but felt that it may be a tad mis-representational in the grand scheme of things. I agreed, and also felt the image was just more immediate without The Groosalugg in there muddying up the concept.

I think the lads were right to pick the simpler version, and so my mission to get Groo onto one of my covers goes on!

ComicCast Birthday Spectacular

Hey, this Friday the ComicCast podcast, Ireland's best(...and only) comics podcast show turns one year old. To celebrate the hosts Liam and Craigey are having a big old bash at Twisted Pepper on Abbey Street in Dublin. It's open for everybody to attend and lots of pros(and me) will be there to sing happy birthday to the lads. Ye should all stick yer heads in if ye're about, should be a larf and a half. There'll be lots of artwork etc projected onto the walls, including lots of stuff from the Ecclectic Micks blog such as the Storm piece here. There're all sorts of bands and comedians and the like, so should be worth the price of entry, ie, it's free in.

Batman..?

This is a commission I did a week or two back. A lady wanted a drawing of her boyfriend(who is a massive comics fan) as Batman as a gift for his 30th birthday. She knew he'd really go for something like this but could never be seen to seek it out himself! I get these kind've requests more often than you'd think, maybe because I'm used to doing likenesses for most of the books I work on, who knows.
Anyhoo, apparently the bloke was delighted with his present so all's well.

Attended the 2D con in Northern Ireland last week and as usual it was fantastic, great hosts, enthusiastic guests, huge turnout, and a handful of us Micks. Hearty thanks to con organiser Dave Campbell who once again pulled out all the stops to make us feel welcome and looked after.
Here's one of many, many drawings of Angel and Spike that I churned out over the course of the con. They were all pretty quick and loose pics but that's the way its gotta be when so many kids are looking for sketches. Actually, that's the best thing about this particular con, the guests are predominantly children, and they're so excited and enthusiastic. The Northern Ireland Arts Board funds the event and encourages schoolkids to attend free of charge, so there's always a great, youthful vibe about the place.

Not Fade Away 2

This coming wed/thurs sees the release of Angel: Not Fade Away 2. I was pretty happy with how the art came out in these issues, hope you guys can pick it up and let me know what ye think. Also happy was I with the cover for this issue, which was an image I'd had in my head for some time and one of those rare instances where the final image on paper came halfway close to resembling the mental version.

Saturday Night at the Movies

Hey, these images(from Brian's blog) have been linked on a lot of the fan-sites already so I figured I might as well stick em up here. What are they for? Draw your own conclusions is all I can give ye at this point.
But know this:
judging from the script I've received from Brian so far, it will genuinely be utterly brilliant. Hyperbole aside, like. Soooooo good; so much fun to draw. I love working with this guy. Oh, and bonus: The amazing Nick Runge is collaborating with me on these posters, he'll be working his colour-magic on them to finish 'em off real special-like. I'm giddy at the prospect of what he'll do with them(no pressure there Nick)!

The NightHorse Cometh

I recently drew this image as an album cover for the very talented(and Irish!) band, Super Extra Bonus Party. It's for their new LP 'NightHorses', which is released this month and I'm very much looking forward to hearing.
I'll stick up the step-by-step process, just so ye can see how the magic(cough) happens.

First off, the concept that I put to the guys. The brief was to have a horse in space wearing armour and being shot at by attackers with rayguns, so the piece designed itself really...

Here are the pencils, no significant changes from the rough other than I flipped the image as I thought it read better the opposite way.

And so onto the inked piece. I was asked to make the horse's head bigger as the fact that he was actually a HORSE might be getting a little lost in there. So I embiggened his noggin a tad. A good call by the band.

Here's my first stab at the colouring. I think it has some decent elements, but on reflection the image looks a bit washed out and the planes needed to be more defined.

Here's the final version. The band wanted the NightHorse to stand out against the BG more, so we lightened him up while darkening his linework, and threw some darker blue hues behind him to pop him a bit more.

And that's my heroic story.

Not Fade Away

First issue of my new Angel miniseries, 'Not Fade Away', is out tomorrow. Please check it out!
The script on this one is by the very talented Scott Tipton, adapted from a piece by Joss Whedon and Jeff Bell.
Also, I'm making an appearance to promote the book at Sub City Comics in Dublin on sat the 30th of May. I'll be sketching, signing and singing for my supper, and fellow IDW'er Stephen Thompson said he'd stick his head in too, so that'll get the teenaged girls in.
I'll stick up times for the signing when I get 'em.

Cordy's a Little Blue... (or) Lorenzo!

On Friday I met a fine gentleman from Pisa, Italy named Lorenzo Croce. Lorenzo is a massive Buffy/Angel fan who was spending a few days in Dublin. He had got onto me previously about maybe meeting up while he was here to talk about the Angel comics and the shows. While I admit I was a teensy bit wary of meeting somebody who contacted me over the net, I'm so glad I did, as Lorenzo turned out to be a lovely fella altogether, totally down to earth and, like me, a massive fan of both shows.
We yapped for an hour or two over coffee, just waxing fanatical about the verse. I also did a couple sketches for him, one of Angel in his FIRST NIGHT hardcover, and also this Cordy pic.
So all in all, stalking people you admire over the internet obviously works, and will score you some free crap.

PS- I can't go without mentioning Kinzica and Marta, Lorenzo's two lovely female friends who were travalling with him. Great people.
Even if Kinzica is a huge CHARMED fan.

Slayalive Sketches

Until now, I still owed a couple of pieces to two members of the Slayalive Buffy/Angel forum, Sagewoman and D'hoffryn(or Jean and Graham respectively), so I figured it was high time that I got my act together. I spent a bit longer on each of these pieces as the guys had been waiting a looong time for them and I wanted to make with the nice.
That, and I have plans for these two badboys down the line...
Illyria is always fun to draw, and honestly I could draw Wes for the rest of my career and be happy.

This one was a lot of fun to do, since I've never properly drawn either slayer before. I loved the dynamic between the girls in early season 3, where Giles was just struggling to maintain some semblance of order as the two egos clashed.
That's how you introduce a new character in my book.
Which slayer do I prefer? Gotta be Faith all the way. Never been a fan of the blondes.

Hey all!
I've just finished up on the latest Angel series, 'NOT FADE AWAY'. I'm pretty happy with how it came out, hopefully you guys'll dig it. I've decided to take on a (very)limited number of commissioned pieces during my downtime before the next book starts. For 100euro(about 130 dollars) you can have a fully pencilled and inked piece of your favourite character. Obviously I'll do whomever from the Buffyverse, but any and all requests are cool.
If you want to add a second character or a specific background to the piece, that'd be another 50 quid on top. Be as creative or adventurous as you like, but get the requests in sooner rather than later as I'll probably only do 5-10 before I get too busy.

Team Angel

Just back from the NYC Comic-con; really enjoyed it. The highlight for me was finally getting to meet my conspirators on the Angel books, Brian Lynch, Scott Tipton, Franco Urru, David Messina and of course head-honcho Chris Ryall.
Sometimes you meet up with co-workers on a given project and end up just making polite conversation with each other until it's time to leave. Not so in this case, we genuinely all got on famously. Brian's wife Carrie was also there, and she's a total class-act, lovely lady. Herself and Jackie rolled their eyes most of the time as Brian and I traded childish, yet devastatingly witty, quips.
Brian himself didn't disappoint, in fact we clicked from the get-go. A magnificent (and handsome!) fellow. Cannot wait to get going on our upcoming books(details a ways off yet unfortunately).
The Italian lads were incredibly gracious, Franco was very charming and totally fluent in English. He presented me with a beautiful Spike original page, which was totally unexpected and very much appreciated. I am genuinely a huge fan of his as an artist and a person, but mostly his ability with the ladies. David too was just so nice, and his originals blew me away. He went out of his way to chat to us throughout the con, and I have much respect for the man. Not to mention his rather attractive studio-mates...
Italians are fantastic.
Scott spent much of his time with David, as the two are such a tight unit when it comes to their books. They make an excellent team, and Scott described some wonderful stuff that they have upcoming, he's a hell of a writer(as I know first-hand due to collaborating at the mo on our first book together, Not Fade Away). Another gem of a man!
And then there was Chris, herding us into some semblance of a tightly oiled machine; no mean feat. I've never met somebody who works so hard at what they love, and that's a bit of a statement considering the industry we're in. Got a heck of a turn-of-phrase, that guy; very dry and witty. Right up my alley. Chris and IDW treated us all to a slap-up meal and drinks on saturday night, great fun!

Well into the second issue of Not Fade Away, and I'm finding myself enjoying drawing this guy so much more than everybody else. He's just gotta be one of the coolest fictional characters ever, in any medium. His journey from Bungling parody to badass throughout Buffy and Angel was the highlight of those shows for me; no mean feat.
I mean, what an arc. Hell, his arc was so complete it was a goddamn circle.
I'm seriously considering lobbying Chris to let me do a Wes/Illyria mini-series/one-shot set during season 5 where they tackle some sort of mission away from the main group. As much fun as adaptations are, I really wanna get back to original material after this. You listening Boss-man?

Adaptation

So I'm knee deep onto the first issue of Not Fade Away, working on page 18 as we type. It's a fairly nondescript page(illustration-wise) featuring a section of a conversation between Wes and Illyria. The real challenge for me so far on this book has been trying to stage the action in a somewhat original way. The episode itself is so well crafted that the angles and shots employed by the director(Jeff Bell) for any given scenario tend to be the best and most obvious choices in each instance. So I'm left with the question, do I use the same shot used in the episode, or try and come up with my own method for staging the scene? How much should I tinker, if at all? I'd certainly rather draw each piece using my own storytelling and pacing, but I still have to serve the script and intent of the writers. Also, I'm sure the readers of the book aren't going to simply want a shot by shot reconstruction of the episode(which isn't really a legitimate concern in this instance, since we'd need a lot more than three issues to pull that off), but that said there are certain beats and images from the episode that you most certainly have to hit.
The settings have to remain the same as the episode, since the locations aren't changing and neither is what happens.
So where I'm finding that I can express myself most is in the shot choice and pacing on any given page. To (literally)illustrate my point: Panel 1 on this page was described thusly in the script:

PANEL 1
Illyria touches her bandage while Wes approaches her with another.

1. ILLYRIA: Then why—

2. WESLEY: Don't I go off and have one last perfect day? Smell the flowers, or sky-dive, or have a go with Mistress Spanks-A-Lot... or whatever the hell one is supposed to do in this situation.

3. ILLYRIA: Mistress Who?

In the episode, we see Wes approach Illyria as she sits on the bed, the camera behind Wes so we can see her front and his back.
I thought that maybe it would be cool to see the expression on Wes' face as he speaks, and Illyria's reaction, as opposed to just Illyria's face, so I shot it from over Illyria's shoulder.

The next panel description reads:

PANEL 2:
Wes applies another bandage to Illlyria.

4. WESLEY: There is no perfect day for me, Illyria. There is no sunset or painting or finely-aged scotch that's going to sum up my life and make tonight any... There is nothing that I want.

5. ILLYRIA: You want to be with Fred.

In this instance, I stuck pretty much with the kind of shot employed in the episode, as we need that close up of Wes as he delivers such a heart-breaking line. No room for me to mess around with this, nor did I want to. The one thing I did was to widen the shot to include Illyria's noggin.

PANEL 3:
Wesley has finished with Illyria, and is wiping his hands on a hand towel. Illyria is looking down as she speaks.

6. WESLEY: Yes. Yes, that's where I'd be if I could.

7. ILLYRIA: I could assume her shape, make her come alive again this once for you…but you would never ask me to.

In the episode, we have fairly wide medium shot of both Wes and Illyria as they converse, as well as intermittent close ups on Illyria . I chose however to focus more on Illyria's downcast, cold expression(as well as drawing it from a slightly different angle to increase the sadness a little)as she makes the offer she knows Wes won't accept. Once we continue to establish Wesley's proximity to her by showing his hands in the foreground our staging is fine. I wanted the emphasis here to be Illyria as opposed to the both of them.

Wesley speaks to Illyria kindly while Illyria touches her bandaged neck.

8. WESLEY: The first lesson a watcher learns is to separate truth from illusion. Because in the world of magics, it's the hardest thing to do. The truth is that Fred is gone. To pretend anything else would be a lie. And since I don't actually intend to die tonight, I won't accept a lie. Is it better?

9. ILLYRIA: It's better.

In the episode, Wesley has stepped away from Illyria slightly as he delivers this speech, and the camera focuses on him. I liked the idea of having Wes lean in and say it softly to her in a warm way, a little more affectionately. I want to be able to feel the tension between the characters.

So that's a few examples of how I'm trying to bring a little of my own personality to the proceedings. To be honest on this particular page I changed things up quite a bit, as I didn't think it was making anything less powerful than it had been in the ep. With most pages I can play around with two or three panels, and otherwise stick fairly rigorously with the shots from the episode. On one or two occasions I was loathe to change anything at all because it was all shot so perfectly, maybe just pulling the camera back to incorporate more of the setting, or slightly changing the acting or some such.
Its a tricky process, and lord knows how difficult it is for Scott to try and break such a dense episode down and then squeeze everything into 60-odd pages, while all the time letting the right scenes breathe and in some instances(this is where the real fun begins) extending and embelishing. I can't wait for some of the stuff he has planned, where we delve that little bit deeper into some particularly favoured scenes...

Anyhoo, sorry about the post being so long-winded, thought it might be interesting for folks out there to have a little window into the proceedings.

Angel: Not Fade Away

So my next book is indeed an adaptation of the amazing, nay, sacred, final episode of Angel.
The original script was by Jeffrey Bell and Joss Whedon, and is being adapted for comics by uber-scribe Scott Tipton(who certainly knows his way around an Angel script). Joining me on the art chores as colourist is the very talented(and Irish!) newcomer, Ciarán Lucas. We hope to knock your socks off.
Do we hope to expand upon certain scenes that left the viewers gagging for more?
You bet yer sweet bippy we do. I'd hate to do something like this that was purely a straight re-telling of the episode. So worry not, we'll try and squeeze whatever extra content we can in there! Its a very dense episode, so we'll only have a limited amount of instances to elaborate on existing scenes, but we'll do our darndest to make those instances well worth it.

Dublin Comic Con: Aftermath

Con was great; really enjoyed meeting everybody again and getting our fun on. Met amazing proper artists like Tommy Lee Edwards, jaysis can that guy draw. Spent most of the two days paneling, sketching and drawing with fellow IDW Micks Thompson and Nick Roche, and of course the legendary Declan 'Widescreen' Shalvey. Met loads've people into Angel and the like, knocked out some decent sketches. Mostly of Hal Jordan for some reason, but I sure ain't complaining. The lady fans like their Spike drawings but after the fiftieth-odd one they do start to take their toll...
Speaking of sketches, if anybody who got one could scan it in and send it to me here at stephen@moondog.cc that'd be super, ta!

So I've started on my next book, an Angel mini-series for IDW. FINALLY I get to draw badass Wesley, my personal favourite.

Details Are Sketchy

Hey sports fans,
Here are a couple of recent Angel related sketches. I recently worked on a run of alternate covers for the current Angel series. The concepts for these covers were chosen by members of the Slayalive.com fansite(hell of a site). Each month Slayalive ran a contest to see who could conjure up the best cover concepts, with the winning concept being voted on by the members of the site. I'd then get sent the winning concept and try to do it justice through artistic execution(I assume whenever I eventually croke it'll be as a result of artistic execution...). Some of the concepts were really strong, and we produced some pretty decent covers between us. Anyhoo, the winners of the each cover competition were supposed to have their names immortalised in the artwork of the covers themselves. Through circumstances beyond anybody's control, a few of the winners' names got left out of their respective covers. So I tried to make it up to them by offering to draw an original sketch for each slighted person. Here are two of these sketches as requested by Erin Waggoner(Willow) and Alan Mulqueen(Illyria).

Hey. Finished up the art on my last issue of Angel: After The Fall last week and the feeling is bittersweet. This is a book that I'd been dying to get onto for ages, and now that my part has ended I miss it already. Wait'll you guys read issues 13 and 14, holy-moley. The sucktacular thing is that I'd had the inside scoop, I'd been privy to the the inner workings of 2 madmen, Brian Lynch and Joss Whedon, and now they've stopped sending me the scripts and I've no fricking idea what happens in the final arc! Aaargh.
Still, I'm incredibly grateful to Chris and Brian for giving me a shot at one of my dream projects, I had the best time.
So what's next? Well lets just say myself and Brian's collaborations are only just beginning, the book coming next from us...
Well, it's bad-ass.

Cut To The Chase

Issue 12 of Angel was released last week and seemed to go down pretty well with the fans. Lots of 'best issue yet' etc. I'm under no illusions, this is down to the incredible revelations in the story this month, but a decent amount of people seemed to dig the artwork too, which is a huge relief. I'm so delighted that I got to draw this particular arc because it features the return of the best female Angel character IMO, the one, the original Cordelia Chase.

Ahoy-hoy,
So here I am, married and mortgaged up to the eyeballs. That was sudden...
The wedding was a huge success, everybody had a great day, especially myself and Jackie. The honeymoon in Rome was amazing, everywhere you look the architecture and design are simply awe-inspiring. I loved it. Settled into the new house and studio now properly, well into work on Angel: After The Fall issue 14. I love this book. Its incredibly well written by Brian Lynch and Joss Whedon, and we're actually shaping the events that follow the classic 'Not Fade Away'. Issue 14 is my last(of three), but it looks like I'll be working with Brian again very soon. Which suits me down to the ground.
As for the image here? These are the credits for my Angel issues. Yep, Whedon and Mooney, together for the first(and probably only) time, because nobody demanded it. At least I can die happy now.
Angel 12 lands in the shops tomorrow, and its a doosy. Pick up several.

Hiyo. So its been a while since I last posted anything, busy busy at the mo. I'm working away on an arc of a book I love, and I couldn't be happier. Also, there's the whole getting married in seven weeks thing, and the house being in the final stages of construction. Poor bloggy doesn't get a look in. Hopefully I'll start some more regular posting as of now, I've a couple new Angel covers in the bank that I'll trot out soon. Was at the 2d comic con in Derry last weekend, and it was yet again a brilliant weekend. I've already confirmed for next year, so maybe see ye there.
This is a piece I just finished for one of my girlfriend's sisters, it's her family as the Incredibles. I LOVED that movie(love anything Brad Bird touches) and it was great fun trying to keep them on model. Reminded me of the old animation days.

Angel: After The Fall 7, The Mummy Prequel 1 Out This Week

Hey-hey, two books of mine on the shelves this week, I'm all excited! The first is the new issue(7) of Angel: After The Fall. It contains the second half of the story started in issue 6 starring Connor and... somebody else. I'm really happy with how it came out, and Brian Lynch reckons its one of the best things he's ever written, so go buy!
The second book is the first issue of a series I've been working on since January with a great writer called Joshua Jabcuga, 'The Mummy - The Rise and Fall of Xango's Axe'. It's a hell of a fun ride firmly in the old-skool pulp vein. It'll buckle yer swash and no mistake. Get out there and pick it up!

Hey-hey, today sees the release of Angel: After The Fall issue 6, which has stories drawn by myself and John Byrne in it, both written by Joss Whedon and Brian Lynch. I think there'll probably be a third story in there too, but not sure by whom. I drew this Connor tale for issue 6, and a surprise character type jobbie for issue 7, so dying to see how they look in print. I love, love, love these characters. The new Angel series has been a phenomenon, garnering many a fan and selling bucketloads.
Here's hoping I don't feck it up...

Working away on the second issue of the mummy, its great fun. Love this type of swashbuckling pulp. Right up my alley. Here's a little random panel, as I don't wanna spoil anything. The lights have just gone out... and the fit's about to hit the shan.
